North Student Named Top Middle School Volunteer

Estefania Martinez is one of America’s most outstanding youth volunteers. The North Middle School Health Sciences and Technology Campus student is one of 102 in the nation to receive the prestigious honor through The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

The nationwide program honors young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 18th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

The 13-year-old seventh-grader has been an avid volunteer at her school and at a local mental health facility for the past two years. Estefania was inspired to get involved after seeing the Red Cross spring into action to help people during times of crisis. "My favorite thing is to do volunteer hours," said Estefania. "People really need your time."

She started by helping kindergarteners and first graders with their homework on a regular basis. Then Estefania made herself available to school officials to help with events such as back-to-school nights, parent coffees and parent-teacher conferences. She says volunteering will always be a part of her life.

As a state honoree, Estefania will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C. for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, ten state honorees will be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2013.

“Prudential is proud to honor these students for making meaningful contributions to their communities,” said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. “We hope that shining a spotlight on their initiative, creativity and compassion inspires others to consider how they, too, can make a difference.”

About The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represents the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. All public and private middle level and high schools in the country, as well as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs and HandsOn Network affiliates, were eligible to select a student or member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Nearly 5,000 Local Honorees were then reviewed by an independent judging panel, which selected State Honorees and Distinguished Finalists based on criteria including personal initiative, effort, impact and personal growth.

While in Washington, D.C., the 102 State Honorees – one middle level and one high school student from each state and the District of Columbia – will tour the capital’s landmarks, meet top youth volunteers from other parts of the world, attend a gala awards ceremony at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, and visit their congressional representatives on Capitol Hill. On May 6, 10 of the State Honorees – five middle level and five high school students – will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2013. These National Honorees will receive additional $5,000 awards, gold medallions, crystal trophies and $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.

Since the program began in 1995, more than 100,000 young volunteers have been honored at the local, state and national level. The program also is conducted by Prudential subsidiaries in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland and India. In addition to granting its own awards, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program also distributes President’s Volunteer Service Awards to qualifying Local Honorees on behalf of President Barack Obama.

WHERE: William Smith High School, 400 Airport Boulevard, 80011

WSHS Student Activists Participate in the One Million Bones Project
Students to Run a Genocide Awareness Event Open to the Public

As part of learning about genocide, inspiring activism and being global citizens, William Smith High School sophomores are participating in the global-wide One Million Bones Project.

These William Smith High School students are hosting an event at the school on Wednesday, February 13, where they will share information promoting genocide awareness and display the bones they created that they will send to the large-scale public art project taking place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in June.

The One Million Bones project was founded to bring awareness to the topic of genocide. It focuses on genocides still happening today in places like Somalia, Burma, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Throughout their participation in this project, William Smith High School students embarked on making bones, learning about genocide, and reasons about why it may have happened. With the coupled dedication of the students and team of teachers, the 10th grade class has created many bones, and has learned about genocide, as well as more about themselves as humans, too.

To deepen this experience, the project has been integrated throughout their classes. In science class, students learned about the skeletal system; meanwhile, they connected to this topic in English class by reading about and discussing recent genocides and other related events. In art class, students worked to create bones for the large-scale art installation in Washington, D.C; in math, they looked at the value of a human life.

Before shipping these bones eastward, this public event will allow others from our local community to tour the student-crafted bones and learn about other issues pertaining to the topic of genocide.

For more information on this global campaign, visit onemillionbones.org.

Truancy Reduction Team to Hit the Streets

NEWS RELEASE # 57
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 1, 2013

WHAT: APS tackles truancy with door knocking campaign
WHEN: February 5, 10 a.m. (news conference followed by door knocking campaign)
WHERE: Professional Learning and Conference Center, 15771 East 1st Avenue, 80011

Truancy Reduction Team to Hit the Streets

Aurora Public Schools continues to work hard in curbing truancy. It is often the dedication of those behind-the-scenes that brings students back to school. In APS, this group is known as the truancy reduction team.

The work of the truancy reduction team resulted in more than 400 students coming back to school this year. That brings a total of more than $2.7 million to the district in per pupil revenue.

Truancy reduction team members make home visits every day. The annual APS truancy door knocking campaign will feature the APS truancy team and the effort behind bringing students back to school. Two APS students will also share their amazing stories of how a truancy reduction team member helped changed their lives.

Following the news conference, APS Superintendent John L. Barry will join the truancy reduction team members and other staff members for a truancy door knocking campaign. The group will knock on the doors of APS students who have been chronically truant this year. The goal is to invite these students back to school.

Last year, nearly half of all APS schools had no habitual truants or showed some decrease in the percentage of habitual truants. Of the 112 students in the 2011-12 truancy program, 61% showed a reduction in unexcused absences.

Members of the media are invited to join Superintendent Barry and other APS staff members at the news conference and as they visit homes to encourage truant students to return to school.
