Aurora Public Schools Teacher Travels to US Capitol to Advocate for Health and Physical Education

Aurora Public Schools health and physical education teacher, Clayton Ellis from Mrachek Middle School, will head to the nation’s capital to advocate for school health and physical education. He will visit with lawmakers on February 10 and 11 to ask for health and physical education to be included in the federal education law known as Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which is up for re-authorization.

Ellis and colleagues from 37 other states will be advocating as part of SHAPE America’s 7th annual SPEAK Out! Day. This year, SHAPE America is looking to secure support for designating school health and physical education as core academic subjects. The group of educators will be urging legislators to bring the only federal funding for physical education, the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP), back to its original funding level of $100 million. The funding decreased for fiscal year 2015 to an all-time low of $47 million.

“As a health and physical education teacher, I see day in and day out the impact physical education has on all aspects of a student’s life, from improved academics and behavior in the classroom, to increased confidence to excelling in other endeavors, both personal and academic, as well as the obvious proven health benefits of being physically active,” said Ellis.

As a health educator, active member of SHAPE America and President of the Colorado Governor’s Council for Active and Healthy Lifestyles, Ellis' job is to promote active and healthy lifestyles.

Currently only six states require physical education in all grades K-12 and many states do not provide adequate health education instruction time as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Past participation from SHAPE America members has been critical in securing Congressional support for elevating health and PE to core subject status. Members have also been successful in encouraging their lawmakers to keep PEP funding from being cut out of the federal budget altogether.

APS 5th Graders Create Healthy Recipes, Compete For Prizes

Working collaboratively with the 5th Gear Kids Team, ZisBoomBah.com is challenging 6,500 5th graders in two Colorado school districts to create their very own recipe from healthy whole foods. 5th Gear Kids is a collaborative effort between the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora Public Schools, and Cherry Creek School District.

“The Healthy Recipe Challenge was created to help 5th Gear Kids gain the knowledge on how to create a recipe, experiment with whole food and find out what healthy recipes they like to eat, and build a sense of pride around healthy living. The goal of the challenge is to get kids to take an active role in making healthy eating fun, affordable and delicious for themselves and their families.  Recipes with photos and/or videos will be posted on ZisBoomBah.com http://www.zisboombah.com/recipes,” said Karen Laszlo, Founder of ZisBoomBah.com.

5th Gear kids and their parents or guardians are invited to create and submit an original recipe made from scratch and using real whole foods. The panel of judges from ZisBoomBah.com http://ZisBoomBah.com and 5th Gear Kids https://5thgearkids.org/ will select winning recipes based on the nutritional value of the recipe; perceived taste; creativity and originality; use of ingredients that are in-season in Colorado; affordability; and the story behind the recipe.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 recipes chosen by the judges, as well as a prize for “Kids Choice” at the 5th Gear spring celebration March 14, 2014. 5th Gear students who do not compete in the contest can still be engaged with healthy eating and can vote for their peer’s recipes. This contest is in support of the 5th Gear Kids mission to engage and empower 5th graders to make healthy decisions regarding food and physical activity through understanding energy balance. “We are really excited to see what our kids create. When kids make healthy food choices at home, their whole family wins,” said Lisa Alexander, Community Partnership Coordinator for 5th Gear Kids.

The ZisBoomBah approach is a departure from everything that has been tried and failed, and the first approach that puts children at the center of the solution. ZisBoomBah ’s website – “where it’s OK to play with your food” – arms children (and parents) with the truth about the food they eat every day and empowers them to create their own wholesome meals with an easy, free online tool called “Pick Chow!” By playing “Pick Chow!” children learn to make responsible food choices early on – a skill that will serve them throughout their life.

APS Teacher to Advocate for Physical Education at SPEAK Out! Day on Capitol Hill

APS-Logo

NEWS RELEASE #43
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 7, 2014

WHAT: APS Teacher to Advocate for Physical Education at SPEAK Out! Day on Capitol Hill
WHEN: March 11-12, 2014
WHERE: Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

Local physical  education teacher Clayton Ellis from Aurora Central High School in Aurora, CO  will head to the nation’s capital with representatives from 37 other states to help ensure health and physical education are considered as core academic subjects under the federal education law known as Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Clayton will be advocating as part of AAHPERD’s 6th annual SPEAK Out! Day on Capitol Hill. Clayton and more than 100 fellow colleagues from around the country will seek additional cosponsors of the PHYSICAL Act.  The PHYSICAL Act, which stands for Promoting Health for Youth Skills in Classrooms and Life (S.392, H.R. 2160), is the key bill, that if passed, would designate physical education and health education as core subjects, making them eligible for federal funding under Title I and Title II. The monies would help school districts expand physical education and health education programs and professional development for teachers, leading to potential opportunities to dedicate weekly physical activity time, enhanced classroom instruction or development of creative health programs.

The group of more than 100 teachers will also encourage continued support for the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP), the only federal funding for physical education. The grant program has been available for the past 13 years and has awarded nearly $800 million to support the development of quality physical education programs.

“As a physical education teacher, I see day in and day out the impact physical education has on all aspects of a student’s life, from improved academics and behavior in the classroom, to increased confidence to excel in other endeavors, both personal and academic, as well as the obvious proven physical and mental health benefits of being physically active,” says Clayton Ellis. There are very few innovative “new school” quality physical education programs in Colorado that offer a comprehensive variety of activities due to the lack of funding and lack of priority because physical education is not required or assessed.

Currently only six states require physical education in ALL grades K-12 and many states do not provide adequate health education instruction time as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Colorado is one of only two states in the country that does not require ANY physical education from kindergarten to twelfth grade. High school graduation requirements in Colorado vary from ZERO to three credits with the average being one and a half credits. Elementary students in Colorado average only 25-50 minutes of physical education per week.

Through AAHPERD’s 2013 SPEAK Out! Day, physical and health education teachers were able to secure sponsors of the PHYSICAL Act including Representative Marcia Fudge (D-OH) which led to the bill being introduced in the House of Representatives for the first time. Other House sponsors resulting from the advocacy efforts include Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) and Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO).

“Both the House and Senate have passed ESEA reauthorization bills through their respective education committees in the 113th Congress. The House version makes no mention of health and physical education and eliminates PEP funding completely. The Senate’s proposed bill does include provisions for health and physical education but does not include them as core subjects,” says Carly Braxton, Senior Manager of Advocacy, for AAHPERD.

“We are looking for more staunch supporters to help move this legislation forward and in the right direction. This is our chance to make real strides in leveling the playing field so that health and physical education programs have the same opportunities to grow and excel as other core subjects,” says Braxton.

Ellis will also have the opportunity to share stories on the impact of PEP on the local level and the need for more stringent mandates for physical education and health education.  In addition, Ellis will attend a special luncheon where Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Marcia Fudge (D-OH) will be awarded with SPEAK Out! Day awards for their leadership regarding the PHYSICAL Act. Both members of Congress are cosponsors of the legislation and also sponsored a Congressional briefing in September to highlight the importance of health and physical education in the nation’s schools.
