APS Celebrates New Mrachek Middle School Grand Opening

Please join APS Superintendent Rico Munn and the Board of Education to celebrate the grand opening of our new Mrachek Middle School. A ribbon cutting ceremony will begin on Thursday, September 27 at 5:30 p.m. followed by free barbecue and building tours for the community.

The new school is a two-story 130,000-square foot building with separate learning communities for each grade level and serves up to 1,000 students. Construction began in spring 2017 and the school officially opened on September 10, 2018.

We are grateful to our community for supporting the 2016 bond measure that made this construction project possible. In addition to bond funds, APS received a grant of up to $16 million toward the construction of the school from the Colorado Department of Education’s Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Program. To learn more about APS bond projects, visit bond.aurorak12.org.

The new Mrachek Middle School was built next to the old Mrachek. The old building will be demolished in spring 2019 and replaced by new athletic fields. Mrachek was originally built in 1975 as an open classroom concept design without windows and interior walls to separate rooms. This design has been a challenge for the school community. Students, staff and families are excited for a new building that will provide a more optimal learning environment.

We look forward to this exciting new chapter, as we continue to accelerate learning for every APS student, every day. We hope to see you on Thursday!
