Aurora Public Schools Teacher Named 2013 Colorado Teacher of the Year

State Education Commissioner Robert Hammond announced today Amanda Westenberg, a social studies teacher at Rangeview High School in Aurora Public Schools, is the 2013 Colorado Teacher of the Year.

As Teacher of the Year, Westenberg will get many professional development opportunities through the National Teacher of the Year program, will attend a ceremony at the White House, and will go to space camp for a week.

The Colorado Legacy Foundation, along with Adams State College, SMART Technologies, Colorado Free Masons and Blue Bell Ice Cream will provide support to Westenberg to allow her time to be gone from her school to attend these events and speaking engagements.

“We know that there is no more important school-based factor in a child’s education, than an effective teacher in the classroom,” said Dr. Helayne Jones, President and CEO of the Colorado Legacy Foundation. “We are pleased to make this investment in the 2013 Colorado Teacher of the Year.”

Westenberg was selected for the honor based on her expertise, the student achievement results she receives from her classroom instruction, and her ability to inspire students. She says she made the decision to enter into the field of education hoping to create a community in which students could feel safe, cared for and cherished.

Ron Fay, principal of Rangeview High School, describes Westenberg as a “dedicated, talented educator who has a positive impact on students and colleagues. She understands the learning process to a degree that is rare.”

Westenberg has been in education for eight years and serves as the social studies department chair at Rangeview High School. She’s developed interactive Advanced Placement curriculum and feels her mission is to enable students to become literate thinkers with the skills to succeed in their post-secondary pursuits. Westenberg believes education must be rigorous, relevant and engaging. She has developed a supportive classroom community grounded in positive teacher-student relationships. She feels it is teachers’ obligation to students, parents, and society to provide the highest quality education.

5th Gear Kids Kicks into High Gear

NEWS RELEASE # 29
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 12, 2012

5th Gear Kids Kicks into High Gear
Much-anticipated nutrition and activity program for fifth graders is underway

The wait is over. This month, all Aurora Public Schools and Cherry Creek Schools fifth graders, are getting geared up to learn about making healthy living choices through the first-of-its-kind “5th Gear Kids” program. The program was developed by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center led by executive director James O. Hill, Ph.D, in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the two school districts.

With 27% of Colorado children considered overweight or obese, 5th Gear Kids is a united mission between schools, parents and businesses to reverse the obesity trend. The program focuses on teaching students about “energy balance”, the direct relationship between a body’s activity level and the amount of calories required to keep that body both lean and energized. As emerging leaders, the fifth graders will serve as healthy examples and role models to younger children and adults alike, in their schools, homes and communities.

“5th Gear could be a game changer”, Hill says. “The program teaches fifth graders skills that they can use throughout their lives to balance food intake with physical activity.”

Throughout the school year, the fifth graders will learn how to apply energy balance concepts to their lives, their friends’ and their families’. They will be encouraged to make healthy food and activity choices through a discount and rewards program at dozens of businesses. King Soopers will provide a 5th Gear Kids rewards card allowing students to record points for taking positive steps toward a healthier lifestyle and to exchange those points for prizes. Healthy choices are as simple as deciding to get up and take a walk, to go for a run or drink milk instead of soda.

“The 5th Gear card allows the students to practice being healthy consumers in their communities”, Hill continues. “I believe the kids who go through this program will have a much better chance of avoiding weight gain and obesity.”

Administrators from both districts point to the educational benefits of healthier students.

“Research shows that children who eat right, exercise and get enough rest come to school more prepared to learn and do better academically,” said Cherry Creek Superintendent Mary Chesley. “The 5th Gear Kids program supports our efforts to help every child reach his or her academic potential.”  Superintendent John Barry from Aurora Public Schools adds, “5th Gear Kids teaches our students how to find a balance of healthy eating and physical activity. When students are fueled and ready for learning, anything is possible.”

Enthusiasm for the program continues to spread throughout the community. Family-oriented, kickoff events are scheduled in both Aurora and Cherry Creek school districts.  The Children’s Hospital and its Foundation continue to lead the effort to improve the health and wellness of Colorado’s children. Corporate sponsors King Soopers, McDonald’s, and Leprino Foods head an impressive list of partnering businesses, restaurants, and sports & recreation organizations committed to making a healthy difference in the lives of this first group of fifth graders and the many students who will follow them.

Nearly 7,000 students will be impacted this year by the healthy messages of “5th Gear Kids”, gearing them up with skills they can rely on for a lifetime of wellness. But, according to Hill, this is just the beginning. “We have never been accused of thinking small at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. We think 5th Gear could spread across the country”. Getting geared up this first year could very well set the example for generations of fifth graders to come.

Denver Nuggets to Hold Scrimmage at Gateway High School

On Wednesday night, the Gateway High School community will come together again as special guests of the Denver Nuggets.

As a way to pay tribute to those affected by the July 20 movie theater tragedy, the Nuggets will hold their annual team scrimmage at Gateway High School for students and staff.

“It’s going to take time to get over," said Nuggets coach George Karl. "Hopefully, we’ll have a good time and the fans will have a good time. It’s paying our respects to what happened, and hopefully we can all help each other get through it.”

News of the theater tragedy hit close to home for the Nuggets, who wore black armbands in honor of the victims during a summer league game.

“They definitely have our support,” Nuggets center Kosta Koufos said. “You heard stories about boyfriends taking bullets for their girlfriends. They’re definitely the true heroes. They were very courageous.”

Among those killed was former Altitude Sports & Entertainment intern Jessica Redfield Ghawi.

Inspired by Ghawi’s effort to collect hockey equipment for families who lost the possessions in the Colorado wildfires, Kroenke Sports Enterprises held a sports equipment drive attended by several Nuggets players on Sept. 8. More than 25,000 pieces of equipment were collected, along with $11,000 in cash donations and $30,000 for a scholarship fund in Ghawi’s name.

Elkhart Elementary Honored for Promoting Nutrition, Physical Activity

On Wednesday, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon will present Elkhart Elementary School with USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) award. The challenge is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. HUSSC is a key component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s national Let’s Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.

Undersecretary Concannon will also discuss the changes to school meals being implemented this year. The new standards, established under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, ensure students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week; substantially increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods and low-fat or fat-free milk; limit calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; and focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.
