APS Superintendent Checks Out “Fifth Block of Instruction”

Approximately 4,000 students accepted an invitation to stay in school a bit longer this year in Aurora Public Schools. The group is taking part in a program called “Fifth Block of Instruction.”

Fifth Block is much different from summer school. Fifth Block is voluntary and is offered to students who have shown academic growth during the school year and could benefit most from additional learning time. Fifth Block provides 23 additional days of instruction for students who are making progress in math and literacy (reading and writing) but are not yet considered proficient.

This is the fifth year of the successful program. Last year, overall attendance rates for Fifth Block were greater than 90 percent. Analysis of CSAP growth data for students who participated in Fifth Block during previous years shows that program participants tend to make better progress than non-participants.

Superintendent John L. Barry will visit Rangeview High School at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 21 to check on the progress of Fifth Block. Media are welcome to join the superintendent during his visit

Fifth Block is going on now through June 28. Transportation, breakfast/lunch and nursing services are available to students.
