Rangeview High School Student Wins $10,000 Comcast Scholarship

The Comcast Foundation has announced that a Rangeview High School student is one of just two students in Colorado who will receive a $10,000 college scholarship this year. The scholarship provides valuable support for Rangeview senior Nina De La Rosa as she prepares to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder this fall.

Aurora Mayor Pro Tem Barbara Cleland and Aurora City Councilman Bob Roth joined Rich Jennings, Vice President of Comcast’s Mile High Region, in presenting the scholarship award and a laptop computer to Nina. The presentation was made in front of an audience of approximately 600 government, education and business leaders at the annual Public Education & Business Coalition luncheon on May 4.

Through Comcast’s annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program, a total of $75,000 in scholarship funding will be awarded to 57 Colorado students this year, with 55 students receiving $1,000 each and two students each receiving $10,000.

Other Aurora students each will receive a $1,000 college scholarship:

  • Leslye Magallon, Gateway High School
  • Tsion Shiferaw, Aurora Central High School

“Through this scholarship program, Comcast is proud to salute talented high school seniors who are leaders in their communities,” said Rich Jennings, Vice President of Comcast’s Mile High Region.  “For nearly 50 years, Comcast has been committed to making a positive impact on our local communities and helping them ‘Dream Big’ by providing innovative technology, encouraging volunteerism, providing financial support and partnering with great community organizations. We hope these scholarships will help these students reach their full potential and continue to dream big.”

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program provides $1,000 or $10,000 scholarships to students who strive to achieve their potential, are catalysts for positive change in their communities, are involved in their schools and who serve as models for their fellow students. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.

Since the program’s inception, more than 500 Colorado students have received a total of $594,000 in scholarship funding. To date, Comcast has awarded more than $17 million to more than 17,000 Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners across the country.

“Each year, we are excited to provide scholarships for these talented students,” said Charisse R. Lillie, President of the Comcast Foundation and Vice President, Community Investment of Comcast Corp. “Comcast seeks students who demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities and who reflect a strong commitment to community service.  These students are our future leaders, and we hope these scholarships will help to power their dreams for success.”

APS Response to Suspension Policy

NEWS RELEASE # 70
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 7, 2012

APS Response to Suspension Policy

Aurora Public Schools is committed to trust, teamwork and transparency. Achieving this is a continual process. We would like to thank our parents, community members and others who shared their viewpoints with us.

Because of our commitment to keep student matters private, which is a legal and ethical obligation, we cannot discuss this case specifically.

Aurora Public Schools wants to assure students, parents and community members that a student would not be suspended for merely singing a song. If actions warrant, we would consider suspending a student to emphasize the seriousness of the actions and to prevent further inappropriate behavior toward another student.

We want to clarify that our discipline procedures allow principals the discretion to work with families and possibly change the reason for a suspension while continuing to address the disruptive behavior.

If a student faces disciplinary action, our priority and goal is to meet with parents and guardians to collaborate with them on solutions that will support their child’s success and promote a safe learning environment for all students.

Previous statement

Aurora Public Schools believes that all students are entitled to pursue their education in school-related environments that are free of sexual harassment, bullying and disruptions. It is APS policy to investigate and deal appropriately with offending students when complaints of such offensive behavior are made.

Per APS policy, “sexual harassment” refers to behavior which is not welcome, is personally offensive, and therefore, interferes with the learning of the victim(s) and sometimes their peers. This is not a criminal definition of sexual harassment; it is one that is focused on providing a safe learning environment for all Aurora Public School students.

APS has a Bully Prevention Campaign in place to deal with bullying at school sites. When bullying involves certain remarks, gestures or contact, it is elevated to sexual harassment. Examples of sexual harassment in APS include:

  • Sexually oriented "kidding" or inappropriate references to sexual matters
  • Continued or repeated verbal remarks about a person's body
  • Making sexual or lewd gestures
  • Unwelcome sexual touching, such as offensive brushing against a person, patting or pinching

A variety of discipline options regarding sexual harassment include peer counseling, suspension and expulsion. It is important to note that, in Aurora Public Schools, suspension can range from in-school suspension, to an out-of-school suspension for the remainder of the offending day, to out-of-school suspension for up to 10 days depending on the circumstance and student discipline history.

The students are now being rewarded for all their hard work with the chance to play in a golf tournament with Aurora Police Officers.

Colorado Open Golf Foundation has invited The First Tee program to their nine-hole learning course for a day of real golf and fun. The facility will provide a great environment for the students to apply what they have learned to a real game of golf.
