By graduation, men outnumber women in nearly every scientific field, and in some fields such as physics, engineering and computer science, women earn only 20 percent of bachelor's degrees. Aurora Public Schools is committed to tackling the dramatic underrepresentation of women in the fields of science and technology.

On April 26, 56 middle school girls from all over APS will prove they have what it takes to compete in the 21st century. The students are participating in a Girls Technology Camp sponsored by the APS Department of Instructional Technology, Hewlett-Packard, Qwest and Vista PEAK Preparatory schools. The camp will include sessions on:

  • Electronic guts (taking apart computers)
  • Rocketry (building rockets)
  • Snap circuits (assembling various circuits)

APS Board of Education Statement: Superintendent Barry Named Finalist

Aurora Public Schools

NEWS RELEASE #77
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 22, 2011

APS Board of Education Statement: Superintendent Barry Named Finalist

It is an honor that Aurora Public Schools Superintendent John L. Barry has been chosen as a finalist for the Colorado Commissioner of Education.  Superintendent Barry is in the second year of a three-year contract.  He has been the Aurora Public Schools’ Superintendent since 2006 and recently was selected as the Superintendent of the Year for Colorado.

Superintendent Barry is a tremendous leader.  Under his leadership, Aurora Public Schools has made achievement gains that have exceeded the state average. Our student proficiency rates have increased faster than that of the state and our growth rate is consistently above the state.

Our strategic plans, VISTA 2010 and VISTA 2015 have both been designed to increase student achievement and close achievement gaps.  It is because of his leadership that we have a clear roadmap for the future of our students.

We wish Superintendent Barry all the best as he goes through this process.  If he gets selected as Commissioner we all win.

Although Colorado law requires that the State Board of Education makes the names of finalists public for at least 14 days before a selection is made, in order to be proactive, on Tuesday, April 26, the APS Board of Education will hold an executive session with its legal counsel to discuss additional legal requirement that may apply to this matter.

Celebrate Trees in Our Community at Vaughn Elementary

Aurora Public Schools

NEWS RELEASE #74
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 11, 2011

WHAT: Tree Planting Ceremony
WHEN: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: Vaughn Elementary School, 1155 Vaughn St., Aurora, CO 80012

Celebrate Trees in Our Community at Vaughn Elementary

In the past few years, deforestation and record wildfire seasons have destroyed millions of trees in our country’s forests. As the U.S. Forest Service spends its resources fighting fires, few funds remain for planting new trees. Colorado has already seen an unusually high number of forest fires this season, and meteorologists predict that dry weather could result in a historic wildfire season. So this year’s Arbor Day celebration is more important than ever.

On Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m., about 90 students in the after-school COMPASS program at Vaughn Elementary School will gather for a Tree Planting Ceremony. The Colorado Division of Forestry will help students don shovels and plant a Pacific sunset maple tree on the school grounds.

In addition to the tree planting, the ceremony will honor Vaughn student Oscar Velázquez, the winner of the COMPASS Arbor Day Poster Contest. This year’s theme for the poster contest was “Celebrate Trees in Our Community.” Velázquez will go on to compete in the state-wide Arbor Day Poster Contest.

WHAT: Gateway High School Hosts Calculus Bowl
WHEN: Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Gateway High School, 1300 S. Sable Blvd, Aurora, CO 80012

Gateway High School Hosts Calculus Bowl

Students from across the metro area are busy preparing for the Calculus Bowl at Gateway High School. Unlike most math competitions, the Gateway Calculus Bowl is much more than a room full of students scratching away on paper with pencils. It is a lively, verbal competition run like the Jeopardy television show.

This fun, fast-paced competitive math event is for high school AP Calculus students. The Calculus Bowl will include 60 teams, with nearly 300 high school students from the metro area competing for the championship title. The competition is open to family, friends and anyone interested in math education.

This is the fourth year that Gateway has hosted the Calculus Bowl, which was originally created in 1992 for calculus students at the university level.  Since then, it has become very popular with high school students.
