Keeping Kids in School

NEWS RELEASE # 44
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 24, 2011

WHAT: APS tackles truancy with door knocking campaign
WHEN: January 25, 9:30 a.m. (news conference followed by door knocking campaign)
WHERE: Professional Learning & Conference Center,
                      15771 East 1st Avenue, 80011

Keeping Kids in School

Aurora Public Schools is working hard to curb truancy. Sixty percent of APS schools reported no habitual truants or showed some decrease in the percentage of habitual truants in 2009-10, compared to the previous year.

All seven middle schools and all four comprehensive high schools reduced the percentage of habitually truant students, compared to the previous year. In 2009-10, APS reduced the number of habitually truant students by 450 as compared to the previous year.

On Tuesday, January 25, APS Superintendent John L. Barry will join staff members for a truancy door knocking campaign. The group will knock on the doors of APS students who have been chronically truant this year. The goal is to invite these students back to school.

Prior to the door knocking campaign, Superintendent Barry will hold a news conference to discuss the many strategies that APS is using to keep kids in school.

Local media is invited to join Superintendent Barry and other APS staff members as they visit homes.
