Aurora Public Schools Board of Education Executive Session

On Monday, August 6, 2018, the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education is expected to recess into executive session under the authority of C.R.S. 24-6-402(4)(f)(I) regarding a personnel matter.

The executive session will be held from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the Annex conference room at the APS Professional Learning and Conference Center, 15771 E. 1st Ave., Aurora, CO 80011.

Two APS Schools to Use Construction Calendars in 2018-19

APS utilizes bond dollars to ensure every student has equitable access to learning environments that support them in reaching their full potential. Over the next year, two APS schools will be receiving major bond-funded improvements.

A replacement building at Mrachek Middle School will be completed in summer 2018. Montview Elementary School is receiving a whole building remodel in 2019. Because of these major construction projects, both schools will use a modified calendar for the 2018-19 school year.

Mrachek students and staff are excited to start school in their new building this fall. The new building will feature a two-story 130,000 square foot school with separate learning communities for each grade level and serve up to 1,000 students. All students will begin school on September 10 and finish the school year on June 6, 2019.

Montview’s project will include a two-classroom addition, replacement of the school’s HVAC system and updates to flooring and fixtures throughout all learning spaces in the building. These improvements will not only increase capacity, but will ensure that the building design aligns with the school’s curriculum.

Montview students in grades 1-5 will begin school on Aug. 6 while Pre K and Kindergarten will begin on Aug. 13. All students will end their school year early on April 24, 2019.

APS Launches Innovative Partnership with CSU-Global to
Enhance College and Career Success Culture

Significant Tuition Discounts for Recent APS Graduates and Staff

Aurora Public Schools is excited to engage in a new partnership with Colorado State University-Global to provide recent APS graduates and staff members the opportunity to pursue postsecondary education and certificate programs at significantly discounted rates. CSU-Global is a completely online, regionally accredited university designed for working adults and offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as certificate and continuing education opportunities.

Recent APS graduates (Class of 2012 or later) are now eligible for an exclusive tuition rate of $250 per credit hour to earn their bachelor’s degree online**. This discount can save families approximately $2,400 per year on tuition (based on a typical course load). That means students pursuing an undergraduate degree can save approximately $9,600 over the course of their postsecondary education!

Students who qualify for Federal Pell Grants can apply, on average, an additional $3,500 per year. This means an APS graduate's annual tuition at CSU-Global would be about $2,500. By comparison, the average undergraduate annual tuition at an accredited four-year university was more than five times that amount ($13,265) in the 2016-17 school year.

APS staff can also take advantage of discounted tuition rates. Current APS employees pursuing an undergraduate degree will also receive the rate of $250 per credit hour**. Staff members pursuing graduate degrees will receive a discounted rate of $335 per credit hour**.

“We are thrilled to offer these significantly discounted rates for recent APS graduates and staff members,” said APS Board of Education President Marques Ivey. “While we recognize that an online experience may not be right for every student, we want to continue to pursue partnerships that expand offerings and reduce barriers to earning postsecondary certificates and degrees. This partnership is another significant effort toward achieving our vision that every APS student shapes a successful future.”

These exclusive discount rates are available as APS and CSU-Global continue to work toward a long-term partnership thanks to the successful passage of APS’ 2016 bond measure. An agreement will fund construction of a new building for CSU-Global’s main offices. In turn, APS would receive in-kind lease payments including free and more affordable postsecondary options for APS students, recent graduates and staff. **Please note that these rates are effective for students who enroll prior to July 31, 2018 as APS and CSU-Global work toward a long-term partnership. After July 31, 2018, these rates are subject to change under a new agreement including modest annual increases.

APS Cancelling Classes on Friday, April 27

APS Cancelling Classes on Friday, April 27

Aurora Public Schools will have a student non-contact day on April 27 due to a teacher shortage. This means that all classes will be cancelled. However, extracurricular activities will take place as scheduled unless parents and guardians hear differently from school staff.

As a district, we strongly value instructional time and act in every possible way to protect it. However, due to the number of APS teachers who have reported absences on Friday, we will not be able to maintain productive learning environments for our students.

A large number of APS teachers are taking leave time this Friday to rally with colleagues from across the state at the capitol to call for increased K-12 education funding. The Colorado Education Association organized the rally because despite a booming economy, our state ranks near the bottom in per pupil spending.

While instructional time is incredibly important, we also know that we need appropriate resources to make sure our students shape successful futures. At present, our limited resources constrain our ability to pay competitive wages, provide appropriate instructional and behavioral supports and maintain a well-rounded educational environment.

Although we are cancelling classes on Friday, it will remain a work day for APS staff members. Any staff member who is not planning to come to work will need to use the appropriate leave time.
