Aurora Public Schools Showcases How Digital Badging is Revolutionizing Education in Digital Badge Summit

Hundreds of digital badge leaders, practitioners and enthusiasts from across the globe are joining forces at the 2016 Digital Badge Summit in Aurora, Colorado. The Badge Summit is the first of its kind and will offer educators a look at how digital badging can help students pursue more college and career opportunities.

Aurora Public Schools students have been earning digital badges through an innovative credentialing program, which recognizes assets and opens doors. Digital credentials can help students communicate what they know and are able to do. Click here for more information about digital badging.

Through partnerships with employers, Aurora Public Schools leaders hope this initiative will help ensure that graduates gain the “real-world” skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.

Preparing students for college and career is a main focus of the district’s strategic plan APS 2020: Shaping the Future.

New Legislation to Help Aurora Public Schools Increase College Access and Opportunities

JUNE 3, 2016

WHAT: Bill Signing Ceremony for SB 16-209
WHEN: Monday, June 6, 2016 at 10:50 a.m.
WHERE: Governor's Executive Chamber, 200 E. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80203

New Legislation to Help Aurora Public Schools Increase College Access and Opportunities

Aurora Public Schools worked with local lawmakers to craft new legislation that will help students gain access to higher education and more opportunities to shape successful futures.

Governor John Hickenlooper is planning to sign SB 16-209 into law on Monday, June 6. It will grant school districts more flexibility when seeking voter approval in bond measures. This includes allowing school districts to build and lease buildings to be used by state institutions of higher education. In lieu of lease payments or as part of a lease agreement, school districts will be able to accept in-kind services including scholarships and reduced tuition rates.

One of the goals of the Aurora Public Schools strategic plan, APS 2020: Shaping the Future, is that every student will have a plan for his or her future. APS strongly believes that creating more opportunities for students to pursue higher education is an important step to realizing this goal.

The cost of college is often an insurmountable obstacle for students and families. By easing the financial burden, Aurora Public Schools hopes to increase college and career options for every student. Prior to leading APS, Superintendent Rico Munn was the Executive Director of Colorado’s Department of Higher Education.

“Affordability and access to college is a challenge that we want to help students tackle,” said Munn. “We want to pursue innovative approaches and partnerships that increase opportunities for all students.”
