AWCPA Students Show EPA Leaders How They Prevent Food Waste

Aurora West College Preparatory Academy (AWCPA) students are showing EPA regional leaders how they prevent food waste at their school. The student-led CHOICES Club started an initiative to recover uneaten food from the Breakfast After the Bell program. Breakfast After the Bell provides Colorado students with nutritious breakfast meals after the school day begins.

The CHOICES Club is focused on making AWCPA as sustainable as possible, so when students noticed that uneaten food from the breakfast program was being thrown away, they jumped into action. With support from school staff, the Aurora Public Schools Nutrition Services Department and Division of Finance, the club has been donating to local food banks and homeless shelters via a partnership with a local award-winning organization, We Don’t Waste.

Since August, the school has donated more than than 1,300 servings. On Tuesday, November 17, the CHOICES Club will show EPA leaders how the program works.

The schedule will be as follows:
(8:15 a.m.) Guests arrive
(8:30-9:00 a.m.) Breakfast in the Classroom
(9:00-9:20 a.m.) Food is sorted and prepared for donation
(9:30 a.m.) We Don’t Waste Donation pickup
(9:30-9:50 a.m.) Time for interviews

*Please note this event is dependent on weather conditions. If school is delayed or cancelled, we will reschedule the event.*

WHAT: Veterans Day Ceremony
WHEN: November 11, 2015 at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Aurora Quest K-8, 17315 E 2nd Ave., Aurora, CO 80011

APS Students Honor Veterans and Salute America

Aurora Public Schools students are honoring veterans and participating in “Saluting America” activities. The Veterans Day ceremony at Aurora Quest K-8 will feature an honor guard from Buckley Air Force Base, the Pledge of Allegiance and many veterans from the community.

The ceremony will start promptly at 11:11 a.m. and last for 11 minutes. Students will be wearing red, white or blue according to their grade level. The assembly will also include a performance by the Quest A Band playing the Star Spangled Banner. The Buckley AFB honor guard will lower flags to half-staff while a trumpeter plays Taps. At the end of the song, flags are raised back to the top, and students file silently back into classes.

“The ceremony itself is very moving,” said Trish Guerrero, an Aurora Quest parent and organizer. “The goal is to give everyone, the kids especially, an opportunity to realize how special our military is and how blessed they are to be Americans.”

Other schools will also be hosting assemblies and breakfasts to honor those who have and currently serve our country. APS students and staff are participating in the Saluting America program, which includes writing special thank you cards to veterans. Each “Tribute Card” contains a patriotic image and quote from a noted American. The cards are distributed to kindergarten through high school students and staff members who write personal “thank you” messages in them. Students and staff then personally deliver cards to veterans and active military service members.

Rangeview High School Hosts CO Court of Appeals

NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 2, 2015

WHAT: Rangeview High School Hosts Colorado Court of Appeals
WHEN: Tuesday, November 3, 10 a.m.
WHERE: Rangeview High School, 11700 E. 11th Ave.

Rangeview High School Hosts CO Court of Appeals

Rangeview High School will host the Colorado Court of Appeals on Tuesday, November 3. The visit is part of the Colorado Judicial Branch’s Courts in the Community – an outreach program the Colorado Supreme Court and Court of Appeals initiated on Law Day (May 1, 1986).

The program gives Colorado high school students first-hand experience in how the Colorado judicial system works and illustrates how disputes are resolved in a democratic society. These are not mock proceedings. The court will hear actual arguments from which it will issue opinions.

A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeals –Robert D. Hawthorne, David Furman and David J. Richman.– will hear oral arguments in these two cases:

  • 15CA0285, Anne Margaret Hesford v. Vail Summit Resorts Inc.: Ms. Hesford asked the Colorado Court of Appeals to review a trial court’s decision to dismiss her lawsuit against Vail Summit Resorts Inc., claiming the company was liable for injuries she suffered when she slipped on ice in a parking lot the company operates in Breckenridge. In the trial court, the company argued there was no evidence it had failed to uphold any standard of care it owed to people using the parking lot. The trial court also agreed with the company that there was no evidence to demonstrate Ms. Hesford’s injuries resulted from “anything other than the natural snow and ice conditions that are common in a high alpine environment during the winter months.” The Court of Appeals’ decision will determine whether Ms. Hesford’s lawsuit can proceed in the trial court.
  • 12CA2407, The People of the State of Colorado v. Linda Ecco Dalton: Ms. Dalton has asked the Colorado Court of Appeals to review her conviction on a charge of felony criminal mischief, which was filed against her after she drove her car through the garage door of a used-car lot in Fruita, damaging several motorcycles and other items in the garage. During her trial, Ms. Dalton argued she did not act knowingly on the night of the offense because she had recently stopped taking her anti-depressant medication and had taken two sleeping pills that evening. She argued because she did not act knowingly, the prosecutor could not prove that element of the offense beyond a reasonable doubt. Ms. Dalton asked the Colorado Court of Appeals to determine whether there was enough evidence to prove she acted knowingly during the offense. She also asked the court to determine whether certain statements and arguments the prosecutor made during jury selection and closing arguments deprived her of her right to a fair trial.

A question-and-answer session, during which the students can ask questions of the attorneys, will follow the presentation of arguments in each case. At the conclusion of the second argument, the students will also be given the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with the Court of Appeals judges.
