Denver Broncos and Western Dairy Association Help APS Students Eat Healthy, Stay Active

The Denver Broncos and Western Dairy Association are teaming up to help Aurora Public Schools students. The organizations are awarding APS a $10,000 grant to provide thousands of additional free and nutritious meals to students.

APS is expanding its Breakfast in the Classroom program to 10 more schools this year and is planning to add six schools next year. The program motivates students to focus in school by providing them with healthy meals every morning.

Western Dairy Association is committed to providing children access to well-balanced meals every day. Their generous donation will help thousands of APS students prepare for a great year of learning!

Denver Broncos player David Bruton will join Miles the mascot and Broncos cheerleaders to kick off the Love of Play Campaign with Aurora West College Preparatory Academy students.

East Middle School Celebrates International Literacy Day

East Middle School Celebrates International Literacy Day

In honor of International Literacy Day, East Middle School is hosting a community event to raise awareness about the importance of reading skills. The event will be held on Monday, September 8 from 5-7 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.

East Middle School students have created Best Book Campaign advertisements to encourage others to read their favorite books. Those advertisements will be running during the event, as well as during lunches for the rest of the week.

In addition, families can explore folklore, poetry, and more from around the world through “read-alouds”. The event will also include pizza, a Kiddie Corner for the community’s youngest members, drawings for books and other prizes and a free book for each East student in attendance.

“As an International Baccalaureate school, East Middle School is dedicated to raising the international awareness of our students and community,” said Principal Fred Quinonez. “Participating in International Literacy Day is a perfect chance for our students to learn and make a difference. Raising literacy in developing countries is one way to empower children world-wide. We’re happy to have a part in that.”

The Aurora Schools Credit Union is sponsoring the event. “As a school-based credit union, we at Aurora Schools Credit Union believe literacy is the foundation for success in the classroom as well as the board room. Literacy is more than a basic ability to read and write. Literacy influences our ability to effectively communicate with each other for personal, professional, and community development,” said Rachael Gregoire, VP Marketing – Aurora Schools Federal Credit Union.

“It’s easy to take literacy for granted but millions around the world don’t have the opportunity to go to school or make a living because they are denied a basic human right,” said Andrew Kay, CEO of the World Literacy Foundation. “Literacy is vital in equipping children to become active participants in their community.”

International Literacy Day is recognized around the world and aims to remind the international community that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning.

Kay congratulated East Middle School for their support of International Literacy Day and highlighting the global needs of many children who don’t have access to books and educational resources.

September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, the World Literacy Foundation partners with local schools and communities to remind all of us of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.

APS Celebrates Community Campus New P-8 School Groundbreaking

APS Celebrates Community Campus New P-8 School Groundbreaking

Please join APS Superintendent Rico Munn and the Board of Education to celebrate the groundbreaking of our new P-8 school on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m.

To address continuing enrollment growth at elementary and P-8 schools in the district, the APS Board of Education approved the construction of the new school on the APS Community Campus.  The school will serve more than 900 students and will open in September 2015.

The groundbreaking will be held at the P-8 construction site, just south of 2nd Avenue.  Parking will be available on 2nd Avenue and in the Aurora Quest K-8 parking lot.

We look forward to meeting the needs of our growing community, as we accelerate learning for every APS student, every day. We hope to see you tomorrow!
