APS Home to the 2012-13 Colorado Assistant Principal of the Year

Matthew Willis, assistant principal at Hinkley High School, is the 2012-13 Colorado Assistant Principal of the Year. The announcement was made by the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), which coordinated the selection process.

Willis is held in high regard as a passionate and results-focused educational leader. He is intent on helping to foster a school culture that maximizes student achievement, and he has worked to increase the professional learning for teachers to ensure that they have the necessary tools to help all kids learn.

Willis regularly meets with teachers and provides timely feedback; in particular, he has taken on a leadership role within the school math department, which has contributed to an ACT score gain from an average of 14.8 in 2009 to 17.5 in 2012.

Willis led and continues to oversee the use of Restorative Justice as part of the school’s discipline program, which focuses on restoring adult/student relationships and has had a significantly positive impact on the school. Discipline referrals have dramatically dropped as teachers use the Restorative Justice framework to help students problem-solve and take ownership for their behavior.

“I have never had the privilege of working alongside someone who is as talented, passionate and goal-oriented as Matthew,” said Hinkley Principal Jinger Haberer.

Willis was selected for this honor by his peers in a rigorous and competitive process facilitated by the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals (CASSP), a department of CASE and an affiliate of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The National Assistant Principal of the Year program is sponsored by NASSP and Virco Inc.

The award recognizes successful secondary level assistant principals who have provided outstanding leadership. Selection criteria include evidence of collaborative leadership; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and personalization.

“This award truly validates the hard work that we are engaged in at Hinkley High School,” said Willis. “As any leader will tell you, no one can do it alone, and I’m honored to have been selected.”

As Colorado’s Assistant Principal of the Year, Willis is eligible for the National Assistant Principal of the Year award that will be given in spring 2013.
